Welcome to Furlock Holmes Animal Care (Charity Number 1179572)! We are a registered animal rescue charity based in Whitchurch, Hampshire. Specialising in rabbits and guinea pigs, we take in unwanted, abandoned, neglected and mistreated animals with the aim of rehabilitating and rehoming them. Any animals requiring ongoing treatment or needing special care remain at the rescue with us as permanent residents. As well as rescuing animals, we also offer a boarding service and care for pets when people go away, whether they are going on holiday or having to stay in hospital and being unable to care for their pets. We strongly believe that not only can people help animals, but that animals can also help people. We take a special team of our permanent residents into care homes, special needs groups and schools for both therapeutic and educational sessions.
At the rescue, we normally have between 30 and 40 rabbits as well as between 10 and 20 guinea pigs. Our facilities include a large barn in which the majority of the animals are housed overnight in their own hutches, a separate quarantine area and a large, enclosed paddock where the rabbits and guinea pigs can safely exercise during the day. We very carefully follow the guidelines set by the Rabbit Welfare Association and Fund as well as the RSPCA. We are set in a secluded spot of about 2 acres on the outskirts of Whitchurch meaning it is nice and quiet for the animals and they also get a great view from their enclosures!
Being a charity, we rely on donations and fundraising to keep the rescue going. All staff at Furlock Holmes are volunteers and none of us get paid. We also don't receive any funding from the government or council and many of the expenses come out of our own pockets. Due to the nature of working with animals, our job is 7 days a week and we can't just close for a few days when we get tired! We are, however, incredibly lucky to have such an amazing team of volunteers to help with the day-to-day running of Furlock Holmes.
